Davidson (Barnett) Cemetery

1. G. W. Barnett (No. 17 in List): George Barnett was born on December 23, 1826, in Monroe County, Alabama, the son of Joseph and Mary Barnett. By 1833 the Barnett family had moved to Kemper County, Mississippi where George grew up on a large cotton plantation. In 1848, the Barnett family had relocated to Texas, settling first in Gonzales County and later in Caldwell County. In 1854, George, joined with his brothers Joseph and John, moved to the San Saba area where they each purchased large tracts of land. The Barnett brothers were instrumental in the establishment of the town of San Saba and in the organization of the county in 1856.

2. Rachel (Watson) Barnett: Rachel Watson was the wife of G. W. Barnett (Number 17 in list.) They were the parents of May Thornton (Number 12 in the List), Lettie Davidson (Number 2 in List,) Ephraim L. Barnett (Number 15 in List,) the Barnett infant (Number 18 in List) and the grandparents of N. R. Bowman ( Number 14 in List.) No information is available on the death and burial place of Rachel Barnett.

3. Will Davidson (Number 1 in List): Will Davidson married Lettie Barnett (Number 2 in List.) They are the grandparents of Billy R. Davidson, owner of the property on which the cemetery is
located.

4. Lettie (Barnett) Davidson (Number 2 in List) was the wife of Will Davidson and she was the daughter of G. W. and Rachel Barnett and the granddaughter of Dr. John Watson (Number 16 in List.)

5. Clay Rishworth (Number 5 in List) and Alfred Wishworth (Number 7 in List) were the babies of William H. and Arizona T. Rishworth. William Rishworth came to San Saba County from England. It was in San Saba that he met and married Arizona T. Bowman on February 24, 1875.

The 1880 federal census lists the W. H. Rishworth household and the Abijah Duncan household as next door neighbors in the Harkeyville Community. Abijah (Bige) Duncan was the brother of R. H. Duncan (Number 27 in Listg. Old cemetery records indicate that “Bige” Duncan who died Dec. 23, 1903, is buried in an unmarked grave in the Davidson Cemetery.

6. May Thornton (Number 12 in List): The daughter of G. W. and Rachel Barnett. May married S. F. Thornton on June 27, 1884. They are the parents of infant Thornton (Number 11 in List) and Kate Elizabeth Thornton born in 1888. Kate Elizabeth and her father S. F. (who died July 4, 1949) are buried in the City Cemetery.

7. N. R. Bowman (Number 14 in List): The daughter of M.B. and Annie (Barnett) Bowman. M.B. Bowman and Annie Barnett were married in San Saba County on Nov. 10, 1880. Mathew B. Bowman died Dec. 28, 1925, and is buried in the Hanna Cemetery. Annie Bowman died Jan. 16, 1939, and is buried in Hanna Cemetery.


8. Dr. John Watson (Number 16 in List): The 1870 federal census for San Saba County lists Dr. John Watson, physician from South Carolina, living in the household of George and Rachel Barnett. Dr. Watson is probably the father of Rachel (Watson) Barnett.

9. Sarah D. Till (Number 19 in List) and John P. Greenlee (Number 20 in Listing): The federal census for San Saba County in 1880 and 1900 lists John P. Greenlee, William P. Greenlee and Sarah E. Greenlee as living in the household of their widowed mother, Sarah D. Till on the Till farm in the Harkeyville community. John P. died Feb. 23, 1895, and was buried in the Davidson Cemetery. His mother, Sarah D. Till, died in 1909 and was buried beside the grave of her son. According to the 1900 census W. P. Greenlee assumed the responsibility for the Till farm and the care of his widowed mother who died April 12, 1909.

10. R. H. Duncan (Number 27 in List): The inscription on the tombstone: “Born in Leon County, Texas, Dec. 6, 1862 – Murdered in Eagle Pass Sept. 18, 1891.” His last words were “I know that God has forgiven me, and I feel that I have heard from him. Goodbye, I hope we all meet in heaven. I feel I am going right there, and I will be pardoned for my sins and washed whiter than snow.”
