CONDITION:

The Mesquite Cemetery is among the oldest in San Saba County that is still in use as a burial ground in 2011. The oldest extant gravestone with an identifying inscription is that of Katie Vaughn, the infant daughter of K. and S. Vaughn. Katie was born December 27, 1884 and died October 29, 1885. It is probable that there were earlier burials in this cemetery, but if so, no records remain.

The cemetery is an area of about ¼ acre enclosed by a four ft. high chain link fence. There is one 10.5 ft. gate opening into the cemetery. The gate is situated at near mid-point in the north fence line adjacent to the parking area. The cemetery has been and continues to be well maintained. The Mesquite Cemetery Association which meets annually is responsible for management of an endowment fund which provides money for the care and upkeep of the cemetery.

Thank you to Stan and Millie Burnham for their work on this cemetery.
