Butcher Cemetery

Location: In Southeast San Saba County near Bend community.  

Directions:
Go east on U. S. 190. From San Saba city limit go 2.9 mi, to F.M. 580.

Turn right onto FM 580 and go south 7.9 miles to the bridge over Rough Creek. The gate to Rough Creek Ranch is just south of the bridge and has a flagpole.

Turn right into Rough Creek Ranch through this gate. Go 1.3 miles to the end of the road, crossing Rough Creek twice. The cemetery is on the left on the side of the hill at the end of the road (trail). Four-wheel drive vehicle is needed.

Condition: These gravesites are on private property. No public access.

Inscriptions:

There are two gravesites in this plot, which is on the original Butcher Rough Creek home place.
• First burial was December 23, 1882.
• Last burial was December 29, 1906.

BUTCHER FAMILY HISTORY

The Butchers of the Rough Creek community
originally came from Buckinghamshire, England. George Butcher married Mary Barrett in Buckinghamshire, England on October 29, 1829. Five children were born to this couple.

1. George Wheeler Butcher was born in 1832 in Buckinghamshire England.
2. William Henry Butcher was born in 1835 in Buckinghamshire, England. He died January 20, 1910 and is buried in Varga Chapel Cemetery, San Saba County, Texas.
3. John Samuel Butcher was born 1836 in Buckinghamshire, England.
4. Ralph Butcher was born 1838 in Buckinghamshire, England.
5. Mary Rebecca Butcher was born January 4, 1850 in Sullivan County, New York. She died
November 24, 1916. She is buried in Varga Chapel Cemetery, San Saba County, Texas.

The Butchers, George (the father) and his wife, Mary Barrett, along with sons George Wheeler and William Henry moved to Texas. The father George died along the way three miles south of the Canadian River and is buried new Widow Beam’s farm.

The mother Mary and her sons George W. and William Henry settled in the Rough Creek community. The brothers were known for raising fine Arabian horses.
