Directions:
From San Saba city limit go north on State Highway 16 for 1.4 miles to FM 500.
Turn left onto FM 500. Go northwest 4.8 miles to CR 117 (unpaved.) Turn right onto CR 117, go 2.0 miles to intersection with CR 121.
Turn sharp left onto CR 121 (very rough). Stay on CR 121 for 6.4 miles to two stop signs on the right. The first sign reads—Warning. Private Property/ Stay Out. No Trespassing.
Cross over cattle guard to second sign, Catclaw Ranch.
Turn right onto road leading to Catclaw Ranch. Go 1.0 mile to locked gate into Catclaw Ranch. From gate proceed by a winding, poorly marked road through pastureland, through another gate into a large hay field and drive straight forward about 200 yards to two large oak trees in the middle of the large open field. The Hinton gravesites are under the large tree on the left.
Condition:
This small cemetery was once enclosed by a rock fence constructed of large blocks of sandstone. When first visited, the fence had been knocked down by livestock or through vandalism. It appears that the fence enclosed an area of about 30 feet by 30 feet. Most of the sandstone blocks were piled around and into the gravesite area. Only one grave was clearly identifiable and the headstone had been displaced from its base and is broken into two pieces. It is quite likely that there are other graves in the once enclosed area, but there is no way to determine this without moving a large amount of very heavy sandstone.
However in 2008, it was cleared and reclaimed by J. W. Callaway and family, grandson of Mr. Hinton.
