1. Martin Luther Montgomery, “Luth” (Number 2 in this Listing} was born about 1832, in Kentucky, the son of Joseph H. Montgomery and Matilda Howard. He married Sabra Williams about 1851 in Madison County, Arkansas. Eleven children were born to this union. The Montgomery brothers, M. Luther, J. Calvin and Joseph N., with sister Abigail, their parents, the J. J. Montgomerys, and other relatives moved to Texas in the 1850’s They settled on Cherokee Creek and gave the land for the Montgomery Cemetery.

2. W. D. Montgomery (Number 25 in Listing) The oldest extant gravestone with an inscription in this cemetery is that of W. D
. Montgomery who was one of the early settlers in the Cherokee Creek community.

3. William Ed “Ned” Montgomery (Number 9 in Listing) was born in September of 1878, in San Saba County. He married Zora E. Christian on March 3, 1901. Seven children were born to this union, five sons and two daughters.

4. Lucy Crabb Randolph Montgomery (Number 39 in the Listing) was born April 13, 1865, in Walker County, Texas, the daughter of Jasper Randolph and Nancy Crabb. She married Richard Menefee Montgomery on June 3, 1883, in Cherokee. They had four children, Eva Lena, Ruby Ella, Richard Herman and their first born, a baby who died at birth. Richard died on Aug. 11, 1943, and was buried in Lordsburg, New Mexico.


8. Nancy (Nannie) York (Number 4 in Listing) was born March 6, 1862, in San Saba County. She was the daughter of Martin Luther Montgomery and Sabra Williams. Nannie married James Madison York on January 11, 1883. Nannie died in 1894 and is buried in the Montgomery Cemetery by the grave of a child na5. Mintie Estep (Number 26 in the Listing. Armitta (Mintie) Estep was born February 26, 1855, the daughter of Elijah Estep and Abigail Montgomery.

6. Jasper Randolph ( Number 32 in Listing) was born September 17, 1826, the son of John Randolph and Francis Cooper. He married Nancy Crabb on Christmas Day of 1847. Nancy Crabb (Number 31 in Listing) was born April 11, 1932. Jasper and Nancy lived in Walker
County for several years where all of their children were born. The Jasper Randolph family moved to San Saba County in 1883 and settled in Cherokee.

7. John Joseph (Jack) Long (Number 37 in Listing was born Jan. 1, 1854, in Falls County, the son of John Joseph Long, Sr. and Elizabeth Hatten. After the family moved to the Rough Creek community in San Saba County, he married Ella Rachel Randolph (Number 38 in Listing), the daughter of Jasper Randolph and Nancy Crabb. They had four children: Willie Archie (Number 36 in Listing), Mary Beulah, Lucy Ray and Ella Ruby. Ella Rachel Long died of tuberculosis November 8, 1899. 

Family records indicate that James Madison York is also buried in the Montgomery Cemetery, but there is no gravestone with his name and dates of birth and death.
