Condition: This old cemetery is located on a rocky knoll overlooking the Cherokee Creek valley. It was named for the J. J. Montgomery family who settled along the upper Cherokee Creek in the 1850’s. The oldest extant gravestone with an inscription is that of W. D. Montgomery who died August 29, 1874. It is probable that there were earlier burials here, but if so, no records remain since most of the graves are marked only by native limestone rocks with no inscriptions. Many of the unidentified graves appear to be those of children. This site was unused and neglected for almost eighty years. However, in 1993 efforts were made to restore and preserve the cemetery. Many interested individuals gave time and money to this effort and in 1994 a sturdy enclosure fence was erected and a Montgomery Cemetery sign was placed over the entrance gate. On April 29, 1995, a dedication ceremony was held in memory of the pioneers who are buried in this historic spot. Annual meetings of the Montgomery Cemetery Association are held the last Saturday in September.
