CONDITION

The China Creek Cemetery is among the oldest in the county still in use as a burial ground in 2017. The oldest extant gravestone is that of E. D. Brown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Brown, born April 14, 1892 and died May 28, 1893. (See San Saba County History Vol. I 1856-1983, pages 438-439.) Since the first burial, the cemetery grounds have been enlarged by the addition of several small parcels of adjoining land. (See official public records of San Saba County in Deed Volumes listed in Footnote No. 2.)

In 1921 the China Creek Cemetery Association was formed “for the purpose of paying off the indebtedness against the land and to provide for the general upkeep of the cemetery.” This community cemetery has been and continues to be one of the best managed and maintained cemeteries in the county.
