J. H. (Shorty) Brown Cemetery

Location: 
This small cemetery is closed for burials now (2007). It is located .6 miles east of the San Saba County Courthouse, or .3 miles from the city limits on Highway 190 east.

 There are only three graves still standing, one has broken into three pieces. A marker is placed in the center of the plot with names known buried there. The Texas Historical Commission put a marker at the gate in 1980. The cemetery is fenced with hurricane tall fencing with a double gate for the entrance facing south toward the highway frontage.

 

 Inscriptions:
Marker near the gate is one stone with two names.

Binnion, R. G. Jan. 1, 1841 ‑ Nov. 18, 1885 "Gone but not forgotten"

Reverse side:

Binnion, Miss Lou Dec. 28, 1865 ‑Nov. 18, 1883 "We will meet again"

East of the above stone, near the corner of the plot:

Smart, Andrew Oct. 8, 1850 ‑ July 30, 1883 "Farewell"

West end of the plot is the broken stone"

Russell, Rev. J. M. April 15, 18‑6 ‑ June 3, 1887 (the space on the date is broken, unable to read)

Behind the modern stone with names is a small stone:

Infant son of H. and S. Dewar Sept. 10, 1892 ‑ Sept. 10, 1892 "Our little boy sleeps sweetly here"
