1.         George Washington Latham was born December 28, 1859 at Wallace Creek in San Saba County.  He was the fourth of nine children born to John (Jack) Latham and Elizabeth Caroline Couch.  George died of a rattle snake bite shortly after the family moved to the previously unsettled area that would later become known as Deer Creek.  He was the first to be buried at this family burial site.

 

2.         Chaney Couch was born August 5, 1813, in Tennessee.  In 1840 Chaney Couch with his wife Isabella and daughter Elizabeth Caroline moved to Texas and settled in a territory later to be designated Rusk County.  It was there that daughter Margaret Ann was born and daughter Elizabeth Caroline married John Latham, another Tennessee immigrant.

 

In early 1856 the Lathams and all of the Couch family moved to San Saba County.  They settled first in Wallace Creek and in 1858 moved to an unsettled area that was later named Deer Creek.  It was here that the family built their first log home, and they all lived together.  In 1863, Couch daughter Margaret Ann married William L. Hayes and that added a third family to living in the one log house.  More room was required and on October 7, 1864, Chaney Couch and new son-in-law W. L. Hayes went out to cut logs for adding another room to the house.  Chaney Couch was killed by Indians that day while cutting logs.  (For more on Chaney Couch family see p. 61, San Saba County History, Vol. I.)
