China Creek Cemetery

FOOTNOTES:

1.         The China Creek Cemetery:

The China Creek Cemetery was established in the 1880’s on land that was originally donated by Matt Reynolds Brown for a school.  The school was built where the present China Creek Cemetery is located.  This school remained in existence until the death of M.R. Brown’s son on May 28, 1893. At that time the baby was buried on the school grounds and the land became a cemetery.  (See Vol. I, San Saba County History 1856-1983, page 438.)

2.         Additions to the Cemetery:

The original cemetery grounds have been enlarged by the addition of more acreage over the years. These several additions of land have been set aside and dedicated for cemetery purposes and have been filed and recorded in the official public records of San Saba County.  The details and particulars in regard to these additions of acreage can be found in:

3.         The China Creek Community:

The China Creek community is located about five miles to the north-northwest of the town of San Saba.  It got its name from the heavy growth of China trees along the creek. The first settlers in this community were the Browns, Blakneys, Cunninghams, Elmores, Gaunys, Ishams, McQuires, McCartys, McKinneys, Masseys, Tomlinsons, and Raineys. It was these early settlers who laid the foundation for an established community with a sch3.         The China Creek Community:ool, a church, and a cemetery.  They named their first school house for the small and attractive “China Knob.” That first school building served as a school, a church and as a community center.  For more on the China Creek community see Vol. I, San Saba County History 1856-1883, pp. 435-439.
